Hunting Calibers

Very popular, highly favored and extremely effective big game hunting rounds, 416 Rigby’s were designed in 1911 by John Rigby & Company in England, and were named for the diameter of the caliber (the first in this size).  This caliber was born from an international race on arms development, and was initially designed to utilize the United Kingdom’s cordite strands (smokeless propellant designed in 1889 which replaced the use of gunpowder in the UK’s military forces).  Initially, the 416 Rigby carried a load of 410 grains, traveled at a velocity of approximately 2 370 f/s and delivered 5 100 foot-pounds of energy to a target, making this caliber a formidable force to be reckoned with.

Designed specifically for the purpose of big game hunting in Africa and India, this caliber meets the needs of serious, professional hunters with a desire to down game such as tigers, lions, rhino’s and buffalo.  In the United States, however, this caliber’s popularity for hunting species such as the Alaskan brown bear and the American bison has increased a great deal over time.
